Marketing Basics

Small business marketing is an activity like no other in the business world.  It’s exhilarating, exhausting, exciting, frustrating and satisfying…and sometime it’s all of those things within one hour’s time!  Small business marketers are business owners, owner’s spouses, and key employees or even hired employees.  The problem is that these marketers likely wear many hats and almost always have more to do than just marketing.
My name is Mark MacAller and I have been involved in sales and marketing for over twenty years.  I've worked in traditional businesses as well as online ventures. I've  managed big budgets and multiple millions in sales.  But  I’ve also turned around and started small companies so I know the challenges small businesses face.  Marketing budgets are small and you don’t have months to plan the campaign…you need sales today.  The big  Ad companies can’t help (they want you to spend thousands) and you  don’t always have time to put the pieces together, after all...you’ve got a business to run.
Well, helping small businesses grow their sales is my passion.  While I still complete consulting assignments as time permits, (you can see the "Mini-Consult" tab if you're interested), the mission of this site is to bring together basic marketing tools as well as marketing tips you can use to quickly push your sales.  The tips are free while some services provided by others linked to the site do incur a cost (like website hosting or email programs) our intent is to do the leg work for you, finding you the best value without breaking the bank.  We've even included some Google space to help pay our bills and delivery top value for you!

To get started, I wanted to briefly cover where marketing has been and where we are today.  Hopefully this overview will give you an idea of how your business fits with current customer audiences and provide a basis for your thoughts about what you need to do next.

The Four P’s – Build It and They Will Come. Classic marketing developed in the late 19th and 20th centuries was all about products.  The industrial revolution, movement from a rural to urban economy as well as spurts of relative prosperity fired an enormous consumer economy.  If you had a reasonable product it was all about getting it in front of the public & they would buy for sure.  Whether it was door to door sales, at a fair, or in a local retail outlet exposure was the key.  This mindset led to a classical marketing approach called the Marketing Mix or the 4 P’s.
